FIPRESCI stands for Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique (International Federation of Film Critics).
The award ceremony took place on Monday during the inauguration of the 50th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, on the Baltic coast.
In a statement to the media, Skolimowski, who turned 87 earlier this year, said:
“It is a great honor to receive the FIPRESCI award for lifetime achievement, even though I have yet to make my most important film. I owe my career to film critics. Until today, I have not had an opportunity to thank them properly.”
Ahmed Shawky, president of FIPRESCI, described Skolimowski as “a true master of cinema, whose films are intelligent, humane, witty, thought-provoking, and effortlessly cool.”

Joanna Łapińska, Artistic Director of the 50th Gdynia Film Festival, told the media:
“Skolimowski has made his mark on cinema history as an uncompromising artist. Once a rebel, today he boldly crosses boundaries, still as open and curious about reality as ever.”
The festival program includes special screenings of Skolimowski’s first two films, Identification Marks: None and Walkover, which represented the so-called “new wave” in Polish cinema, as well as his most recent feature EO, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
Skolimowski’s filmography also includes Hands Up, Moonlighting, Deep End, Four Nights with Anna, and Essential Killing.
Early in his career, he co-wrote the screenplay for Andrzej Wajda’s Innocent Sorcerers, as well as Roman Polański’s highly acclaimed debut feature Knife in the Water (together with Polański).
