The Verona Opera Company in Italy has cancelled upcoming performances by Russian baritone Ildar Abdrazakov, who had been scheduled to sing in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" in January.

The decision came after protests from the Anti-Corruption Foundation, established by the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in a penal colony last year.

In a statement quoted by Italian media, the foundation described Abdrazakov as "a Putin ally, supporter and propagandist" who served as a trusted member of last year’s presidential campaign for Vladimir Putin.

The group noted that he currently heads the State Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea.

The foundation said European venues should not host performers who openly support the Kremlin’s war policies.

Earlier this year, performances by Russian conductor Valery Gergiev at an opera festival in Caserta, southern Italy, were also cancelled following protests from Italian intellectuals.

Gergiev, a close ally of Putin, publicly supported Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
