Police inform of high traffic on main roads and exit routes from the big cities as many Poles start their Christmas holidays early.
According to Radosław Kobryś from the State Police Headquarters, the end of December is one of the most dangerous periods on Polish roads, second only to the high at the turn of November, when Poles visit cemeteries on All Saints' and All Souls' Day. Over the next few days Polish police are announcing more speed patrols on the roads, and more checks of drivers.
Meanwhile Polish Railways say that although they have not increased the number of connections before Christmas, they are monitoring demand and more cars will be added on to scheduled trains if need be. Spokesperson for PKP Intercity Katarzyna Grzduk has told Polish Radio that additional connections are to be launched after the New Year: on January 1st and 6th there will be three new trains on the route from mountain resort Zakopane to Warsaw. Zakopane is hosting a big New Year's Eve event organised by public television TVP, as well as being a popular wintertime destination. Over the New Year there will also be two cross-country night shuttle trains from Gdynia on the Baltic coast to Zakopane.
Railway services are also increasing the number of information points at stations to help passengers find the right connections or transfers.
On December 15th PKP introduced a new schedule. Currently there are around 400 rail connections running daily in Poland.
