Co-organised by Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre, this year’s edition is run under the theme “Climate and Us” to spread awareness on how to tackle the impacts of global warming and environmental crisis. This edition is divided into eight thematic zones including civilisation, the future, DIY and epic experiments. Typically one-day event, the Science Picnic has been expanded this year to a one-week format.
“On top of a live stream including presentations and workshops on Saturday and Sunday, you are more than welcome to stay at the Picnic’s virtual sites throughout the week with 300 videos by 110 scientific contributors to be enjoyed online,” Polish Radio CEO Agnieszka Kamińska said on Saturday.
According to its website, the Science Picnic is Europe's largest outdoor event aimed at the promotion of science. It is organised jointly by Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre. The event has been held every year since 1997 with the exception of 2020. Research and teaching institutions from Poland and abroad are invited there to reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of their work and present science in ways accessible to visitors of various ages, using hands-on experiments and interactive exhibits.
The Science Picnic was commended by the European Commission in 2005 as one of 10 model European projects in the "Science and Society" field. The event has served as the inspiration for many other popular science initiatives, including the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw.
