Poland gained independence from the former partitioning powers of Russia, Prussia and Austria in November 1918. The current Polish flag, red and white, was formally adopted in August 1919.
The National Bank of Poland has produced 13,000 commemorative coins to mark the anniversary. They will be available for purchase by collectors.
The new commemorative coin depicts the Polish flag, in colour, on both sides, with the flag seeming to carry over from one side to the other. It also displays figures meant to represent Polish society.
The coin has a face value of PLN 10 (EUR 2.30). However, due to its special status and limited circulation, the coin will be sold for PLN 150 (EUR 34.60).
To mark Poland’s centenary of independence, the country’s central bank has produced several sets of commemorative coins and notes.
