The Poles defeated Italy 3-0 in the final of the 2023 Men's EuroVolley championships in Rome on Saturday, taking their second continental championship gold after a win in Turkey in 2009.

Meeting the team at his Prime Minister’s Office in Warsaw on Monday morning, Mateusz Morawiecki congratulated the players, telling them they were "the best ambassadors of Poland and all things Polish" internationally, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

"Polish volleyball is something absolutely unique," Morawiecki said during the meeting.

"It is not only the best in Europe, but the best in the world," he added, as quoted by state news agency PAP.

Morawiecki earlier described the volleyball team as Poland's "national treasure."

On Sunday, crowds of enthusiastic fans greeted the Polish team when it arrived home after winning the European championships.

The 2023 Men's EuroVolley tournament was held in Italy, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Israel from August 29 to September 16.

The Poles won the bronze at the 2021 EuroVolley tournament.

Poland won world championship titles in 2014 and 2018 and finished runners-up last year.

Earlier this year, Grbić's men won the Volleyball Nations League.
