Ukraine repels Russian drone attack on Odesa, Khmelnytskyi

Ukraine's air defences have fought off a new aerial assault by Russia, destroying 15 of 18 Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by Moscow, according to officials.

Russia launched the drone attack in the early hours of Thursday, The Kyiv Independent website reported. 

Russian forces fired 18 UAVs in the direction of Ukraine's southern Odesa region and the western Khmelnytskyi province, according to officials in Kyiv.

Ukrainian air defence forces shot down 15 of 18 Russian drones, Ukraine's military authorities said.

One person was killed in a Russian attack in the southern Danube port of Izmail, according to the governor of Odesa.

Russia has recently carried out a series of massive drone strikes against Ukraine, with officials in Kyiv warning that Russia plans to step up its strikes in the winter, The Kyiv Independent reported.

Two pro-Russian officials killed

On Wednesday, "unspecified actors" killed former pro-Russian Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada deputy Ilya Kiva in the Moscow region, the Institute for the Study of War, a US-based think tank, reported.

According to Ukraine's Espreso TV website, it was "a special operation of the Security Service of Ukraine."

Also on Wednesday, an attack in Ukraine's Russian-occupied Luhansk City killed Moscow-backed lawmaker Oleg Popov, according to news outlets.

Ukrainian partisans may have conducted the attack, the ISW reported.

Thursday is day 652 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
