The attacks came after a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin—delivered via US President Donald Trump—that Moscow would retaliate after Ukrainian drones destroyed several strategic bomber aircraft deep inside Russia, the Reuters news agency reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said three emergency workers were killed in the capital Kyiv.
"Those killed in Kyiv were rescue workers who arrived at the scene of an initial strike and, unfortunately, were killed in a repeat Russian strike," Zelensky said in his nightly video address.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X that Russia had "responded" to the loss of its aircraft by targeting civilians.
"Multi-storey buildings hit. Energy infrastructure damaged," he said.
Zelensky said 80 people nationwide were injured in the attacks.
Ukraine's air force said Russia used 452 drones and missiles in the assault.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Friday is day 1,199 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
