The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said the incident took place at around 10:50 a.m. local time, when a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft entered Polish airspace by about 2 kilometres.

"This is another case of provocative testing of the readiness of NATO countries' systems," the Operational Command said in a post on the X platform.

It added that a pair of British fighter jets stationed in Poland as part of a NATO Air Policing mission were scrambled before the Russian aircraft crossed into Polish airspace.

The jets intercepted and identified the Russian plane, which then exited Polish airspace, the military said.

The incident is now under review within NATO, the Operational Command reported.

Air Policing is a NATO defensive mission designed to safeguard allied airspace and deter unauthorised or hostile activity.

A similar incident was reported three weeks earlier, when Poland’s Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that Polish fighter jets had intercepted a Russian Su-24 aircraft performing dangerous manoeuvres over international waters in the Baltic Sea.

Tensions in the Baltic region have remained high amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and NATO's increased surveillance efforts near its eastern flank.
