Ukrainian forces have recaptured around 20 percent of the territory they lost in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk since Russia’s invasion, Serhiy Gaidai, the head of the eastern region of Luhansk, announced on Friday.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia still controls most of Sievierodonetsk, a key city in Ukraine's southeastern Donbas region.

However, Ukrainian forces have pushed back Russian troops by approximately 20 percent, Gaidai told national television.

The Reuters News Agency was able to confirm that, as of Thursday, Ukrainians still held part of the city, largely devastated by Russia's intense assault.
