Dmitri Miedwiediew, the vice-chair of the Russian Security Council, issued the threat in the lead up to the NATO summit in Madrid.

Miedzwiediew said that, "For us, Crimea is a part of Russia. And that means forever. Any attempt to interfere with Crimeais a declaration of war against our country."

He continued, "And if a NATO country does that [interferes], this amounts to a conflict with the entire NATO alliance, the third world war. A total disaster."
