In an interview with Polish news outlet Onet.pl, Kwaśniewski expressed strong criticism of Karol Nawrocki, a right-wing populist candidate who faces allegations of unethical conduct, including accusations of fraudulent acquisition of a senior citizen’s apartment.

Kwaśniewski stated: “This is a man it is better not to meet, and certainly not to have as president.”

He also commented on the political context, noting the irony that the former ruling party, which held near-absolute power for eight years, is now warning against the concentration of power by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Rafał Trzaskowski.

Kwaśniewski described this stance as contradictory.

The former president highlighted his surprise at the election’s first-round results, where Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, representing the centrist Civic Coalition, won the most support, and Nawrocki, backed by the right-wing Law and Justice party, came in second.

In a separate interview with Polish Radio 3, Kwaśniewski, a former long-time leader of the Polish left, urged left-wing politicians to build on the potential demonstrated by candidate Magdalena Biejat, who secured just over 4 percent of the vote. He also praised Adrian Zandberg, another left-wing candidate, for achieving an even stronger result.

The runoff between Trzaskowski and Nawrocki is scheduled for June 1.
