The vote, 314-11 with 134 abstentions, came as Poland’s newly elected parliament held its first session in Warsaw.

Witek, from the governing conservative Law and Justice (PiS) and a former interior minister, served as Speaker of Poland’s previous parliament.

She was elected in August after her predecessor quit amid claims he misused government planes.

That vote was held just two months before a general election in Poland.

Poles elected a new set of 460 MPs and 100 senators when they went to the ballot box last month.

The ruling Law and Justice party, allied with two smaller groupings in a United Right coalition, won Poland's October 13 parliamentary election and secured a second term in power.

It maintained a majority in the 460-seat lower house, but narrowly lost control of the 100-seat upper house.
