"We received alarming information that the man had been planning to turn his flat into 'a bomb'," Polish police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka was cited as saying by public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

“The collected evidence suggests that the suspect wanted to blow up the flat and the building," Ciarka added.

The suspect has been charged with illegal possession of explosives and with endangering lives, Iwona Śmigielska-Kowalska, a spokeswoman for the local prosecutor’s office, told state news agency PAP on Monday.

The man has pleaded not guilty to the second charge, PAP reported.

If found guilty, he faces up to eight years in jail.
