In a letter published on Twitter, Duda wrote: "I would like to express my joy that the Swedish Academy has honoured your work, in which universal truths and Polish sensitivity complement each other so well."

He added: “I am happy that your literary craft, which has long been appreciated by readers, critics and scholars, both in this country and abroad, has now been held in the highest esteem by the members of the Nobel Committee."

Duda also hailed the prize as "a wonderful success that will go down in the history of Polish and world literature."

Tokarczuk was named the winner of the 2018 Nobel prize in literature in October. She picked up her diploma and gold medal from the King of Sweden at a glittering ceremony in Stockholm on Tuesday.

She wore an outfit that featured a long, black velvet dress and discreet jewellery. The outfit was especially made for the occasion by two Warsaw-based designers, Gosia Baczyńska and Kasia Wójcik.
