Poland's coronavirus cases rise to 72,453, deaths up to 2,159: health ministry

A total of 72,453 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland since the start of the pandemic, and 2,159 have died from the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, officials said on Thursday.

The number of new virus cases rose by 506, compared to 421 fresh cases on Wednesday, 400 on Tuesday, and 302 on Monday.

The death toll increased by 12 on Thursday.

A total of 58,069 have now recovered from COVID-19 across Poland, the health ministry said.

It added that as of Thursday, 83,170 people were in quarantine.

On August 21, Poland's public health authorities reported a record daily rise of 903 new coronavirus infections nationwide, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.

Poland's first SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed by authorities on March 4, while the country's first coronavirus fatality was announced on March 12.

Poland last week reopened most of its schools to students after the summer break ended and a new school year began.
