A host of events to mark the day, which is a public holiday in Poland, have moved online.

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski has called on Poles not to venture out, adding that this would be “an expression of patriotism.”

Officials have encouraged people across the country to sing the Polish national anthem in their homes at noon.

In previous years, the day has been marked by ceremonies with a patriotic flavour, concerts and Catholic masses.

Meanwhile, the organisers of an annual Independence Day march in Warsaw, which in the past has seen tens of thousands taking to the streets, have said it will take place in motorised form late on Wednesday afternoon.

Instead of walking through the streets, participants plan to drive around the Polish capital.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki last week appealed for the Independence March to be called off amid a surge in COVID-19 infections.

Gatherings of more than five people have been forbidden in Poland under rules aiming to curb the spread of the coronavirus, and the government has warned that a nationwide lockdown may be imposed if cases continue to surge.

Officials on Tuesday reported 25,484 new coronavirus infections and 330 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases to 593,592 and fatalities to 8,375.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.
