The figures were lower than during the same period a year ago, according to police.

Over 1,000 drink-drivers were stopped, including 201 on New Year's Eve and 418 on New Year's Day, according to the latest police figures.

"The beginning of the year on Polish roads started relatively safely," said Robert Opas from the road traffic department of Polish police headquarters.

Under rules designed to curb the coronavirus epidemic, free movement was restricted throughout the country from 7 p.m. on December 31 to 6 a.m. on January 1.

Most people stayed home on New Year’s Eve and celebrated only with their immediate family, heeding calls from health officials and experts, news outlets reported.
