Fire crews were unable to save all the herd and 21 animals died in the incident on Wednesday, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

Firefighters said the rescue effort, near the north-western village of Ścienne, was difficult and unusual.

With the bodies of eight deer still in the water, firefighters stopped the operation because of bad weather. They were to continue on Thursday, according to Polish Radio.

Five fire crews took part in the rescue effort.
