Poland reports 204 new coronavirus cases, no fatalities

Poland on Sunday reported 204 new coronavirus infections and no deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,888,231 and fatalities to 75,340.

Of the new cases confirmed on Sundaythe most—33—were in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the capital Warsaw. The fewest cases were reported in the north-eastern Warmia-Masuria province - 3, the health ministry said.

403 in hospitals, 53,308 quarantined

The ministry announced on Sunday morning that 403 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 57 of them on ventilators, seven more than on the previous day. 53,308 people have been quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure, 2,000 more than on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 2,656,855 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

A total of over 36 million vaccine shots have been administered in Poland so far, including some 40,000 over the last 24 hours, officials announced on Sunday. Public health authorities said that over 14,000 adverse reactions had been reported among those who received the vaccines by Sunday morning.

18,704,011 people have been fully inoculated, health ministry data showed.

Poland's medical authorities have decided to offer a third Covid-19 shot to people with reduced immunity, the health minister said on Friday.

Adam Niedzielski added that patients would qualify for a third dose on an individual basis, following a doctor consultation, which should be available from September 1.

The European Union's biggest eastern member Poland braces for a fourth wave that is already hitting its western neigbours. With the highly malicious Delta variant growing rampant, the country expects the epidemic situation to deteriorate in the autumn.

For the time being, at around 200 a day, Poland's daily COVID-19 infections are a fraction of what they used to be during the third wave in the spring.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.
