Poland reports 13,601 new coronavirus cases, 638 more deaths

Poland on Friday reported 13,601 new coronavirus infections and 638 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 4,108,215 and fatalities to 97,054.

Of the new cases confirmed on Fridaythe most—1,824—were in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 1,643 new infections were reported in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

The latest deaths in Poland's coronavirus outbreak are 405 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 233 others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

On Thursday, Poland confirmed 709 deaths and 14,325 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 794 deaths and 15,571 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

19,936 in hospitals, 213,742 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Friday morning that 19,936 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 1,910 of them on ventilators, with a further 213,742 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 3,630,119 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Public health authorities in the middle of this month confirmed Poland's first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant. Since then 24 more omicron cases have been detected, according to Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska.

A range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect in the country earlier this month as it seeks to fend off the new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus.
