Poland’s Border Guard on Monday announced that 49 people had attempted to enter the country illegally from Belarus over the past 24 hours, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Among other attempts, a group of several aggressive persons tried to force their way through the border near the Polish village of Mielniki on Monday morning. Polish patrols were pelted with rocks and pieces of wood, officials told reporters.

Poland’s Border Guard agency added in a statement that the foreign nationals trying to cross the frontier were being helped by Belarusian forces, IAR reported.

In the course of 2021, there were almost 40,000 illegal crossing attempts from Belarus, with the highest number - 17,500 - recorded in October, Border Guard’s data showed.

To stave off an influx of migrants, Poland has introduced new, stricter border protection rules and is set to build a 5.5-metre-high, 180-kilometre-long protective wall along its frontier with Belarus.

The protracted migrant crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border escalated in the autumn of 2021, with the European Union, NATO and the United States accusing Belarus' strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko of orchestrating the standoff in retaliation for Western sanctions against his regime.
