This marks the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent days.

For the second day in a row, a pair of MiG-29 fighters scrambled to intercept a Russian reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea.

Speaking about the operation, Kosiniak-Kamysz said: “We are living in very challenging and difficult times. At 8:49 this morning, our MiG-29s once again intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. It did not enter Polish airspace. Our air defence and anti-aircraft systems were active throughout the night, and both national and allied aircraft were scrambled. The operation has concluded.”

Polish air defences return to normal following Russian strikes on Ukraine

During the night and into Thursday morning, Russian forces carried out a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine. In response, Polish and allied fighter jets were scrambled to patrol Polish airspace as a precaution.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that, around 5 a.m., the jets were deployed to monitor the situation, with the operation emphasised as entirely precautionary. After roughly five hours, the air patrols concluded.

Alongside Polish aircraft, jets from Norway, Spain, and Turkey participated in the operations, while German forces supported with a Patriot missile system.

By around 10:30 a.m., authorities confirmed that operations over Polish airspace had ended. Ground-based air defence and radar systems have now returned to normal, and no violations of Polish airspace were observed.
