Slovak politician Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová was on Thursday elected as head of the European Parliament’s employment committee after deputies twice rejected Polish ex-Prime Minister Beata Szydło for the post.

Nicholsonová was backed by 38 Euro-deputies, while 14 voted against her and three abstained.

Polish leaders earlier this week voiced anger after members of the European Parliament voted against Szydło, who hails from her country’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.

PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński said on Tuesday that Szydło “simply paid for the fact that she represents a Catholic country and has Christian values.”

Kaczyński said that MEPs’ decision on Monday evening to reject Szydło for the second time was a surprise “because we had certain agreements struck at the highest level.”

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday: “We express deep disapproval of this type… of behaviour, breaking agreements.”
