Antoni Macierewicz, from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, said on Monday that a previous Polish probe into the crash had deliberately ignored some evidence.

Next month will see the 10th anniversary of the disaster, which is still a source of controversy and recriminations in Poland.

The crash near the western Russian city of Smolensk on April 10, 2010, killed Polish President Lech Kaczyński and 95 others, including senior military officers.

Poland’s ruling conservatives have long challenged an official report into the causes of the disaster issued by the previous Civic Platform-led government, which cited a catalogue of errors on the Polish side, while also pointing to errors made by Russian staff at the control tower of Smolensk Military Airport.

A Russian report placed all the blame on the Poles.

A new commission to probe the crash was set up by the Law and Justice party, which came to power in Poland in 2015 and won a second term last October. The party is headed by Jarosław Kaczyński, twin brother of the late President Lech Kaczyński.

In April 2017, the new commission, headed by Macierewicz, said that the presidential plane was probably destroyed by a mid-air explosion and that Russian air traffic controllers deliberately misled Polish pilots about their location as they neared the runway.

Macierewicz said in April last year that a probe had shown those on board died as a result of a blast.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied Polish suggestions that the 2010 air crash was the result of a conspiracy hatched by Moscow.

Interviewed by public broadcaster Polish Radio on Monday, Macierewicz said: "If officials … deliberated how to write [a report] so that the word ‘explosion’ does not appear, then we are dealing with the most terrible crime. They acted cynically in order to falsify the course of events."
