Tarkowski, who has worked in Italy for 13 years, is a member of a six-strong research team from Milan’s Sacco hospital and the city’s university, which at the end of February isolated the Italian strain the coronavirus.

The virus was isolated from four patients in the town of Codogno in the northern Italian province of Lodi, where on February 20 the first case of infection was confirmed in Italy.

Tarkowski has told the Polish Press Agency that thanks to the isolation of the Italian coronavirus strain it would be possible to establish how it differs from the Chinese pathogen.
