Speaking to reporters during a visit to the US capital, Marcin Przydacz said: "We need a lasting, permanent American presence and we are discussing it here.”

Przydacz spoke to the media on the sidelines of a meeting of Munich Security Conference leaders, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Munich Leaders Meeting has brought together an exclusive group of senior politicians and experts, including heads of government, foreign and defence policy chiefs, and lawmakers, according to organisers.

Przydacz said that participants "shared the conviction that we must continue our policy of supporting Ukraine and sanctioning Russia.”

He told reporters that Poland was being praised “for assisting Ukraine and welcoming refugees,” and added that the government would push “for financial assistance” for the purpose, “from our allies, from the United States, but especially from the European Union.”

‘We need a lasting, permanent American presence’

Przydacz revealed that also on the agenda was “the future of NATO and the strengthening of its eastern flank” amid the Russian attack on Ukraine.

He said he had lobbied for a boost to NATO’s eastern edge, “especially a strengthening of the American presence.”

He told reporters: “In my assessment, more and more voices are in favour … We are definitely much closer to final decisions, but they will take a little more time.”

On Wednesday, Przydacz is set to hold talks at the US State Department and the White House, the PAP news agency reported.

Tuesday was day 76 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Tuesday reported it had welcomed nearly 3.28 million refugees fleeing Russia's war on Ukraine.
