Speaking at the summit of the foreign ministers of Poland, Turkey and Romania in Istanbul on Friday, the head of Polish diplomacy Zbigniew Rau also said that a new concept of strategic deterrence of the alliance is set to be adopted in June.

He also highlighted the importance of enlarging and strengthening NATO with Sweden and Finland.

“This is particularly important, in the context of the upcoming NATO summit in June, the adoption of a new strategic concept with strengthening of deterrence and defence at its core, and the process of NATO enlargement to include Sweden and Finland,” Rau said.

Last week, Sweden and Finland officially applied to join the NATO alliance in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Turkey said at the time it would vote against the admission of the two Nordic states.

Enlargement of the Western military alliance requires the consent of all 30 existing members.
