Polish, Austrian FMs discuss support for Ukraine

Poland’s foreign minister on Tuesday hosted his Austrian counterpart, with assistance to war-torn Ukraine high on the agenda.

Poland’s Zbigniew Rau and Austria’s Alexander Schallenberg also discussed ways to strengthen sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, officials told reporters. 

The Polish foreign minister told a briefing afterwards: “An important topic of our talks was the situation in Ukraine.”

He added: “Since the beginning of the war, Poland has been an unwavering supporter of Kyiv at all key levels.”

EU candidate status for Ukraine

Rau and Schallenberg spoke about the granting of European Union candidate status to Ukraine, among other issues, reporters were told. 

“We must help Ukraine win. Russia must be made to feel the costs of its actions,” Poland’s top diplomat stated. 

Also on the agenda were bilateral matters and ways to remember the victims of the World War II Nazi German concentration camp in Mauthausen-Gusen, Austria, officials said. 

Tuesday was day 104 of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
