Abe died on Friday after being shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election, news agencies reported. He was 67.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Twitter: "I am deeply shocked by the news of the assassination of Shinzo Abe. My thoughts are with the family of our Japanese friend who was always very kind to Poland. May he rest in peace."
Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau tweeted: "I received the news of the death of the former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. We will always remember his visit to Poland and the friendship shown to Poland and Poles."
Rau added: "Let us commemorate the victim of a criminal attack."
The Polish embassy in Tokyo said: "We are heartbroken by the news of death of the former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a great Japanese statesman and a great friend of Poland. Our thoughts are with his family and close ones. May time bring them consolation and peace."
Abe was shot with a homemade firearm while giving a campaign speech in the western city of Nara, the Reuters news agency reported. He was taken to a hospital by helicopter, but could not be saved.
The suspected gunman, a former member of the Japanese military, was arrested at the scene, according to media reports.
