“This week, the first shipment of U.S. crude oil will depart for Belarus,” the US Department of State said in a statement dated May 15.

It added: “This competitive deal, by U.S. energy trader United Energy Trading, with the assistance of U.S. firm Getka and their Polish partner UNIMOT, strengthens Belarusian sovereignty and independence.”

According the statement on the US State Department’s website, the deal “demonstrates that the United States is ready to deliver trade opportunities for American companies interested in entering the Belarusian market, and fulfills the commitment the United States made to Belarus in February with government leaders in Minsk.”

Poland’s UNIMOT is an importer of liquid fuels, gas and electricity.

According to a report last month, Belarus is set to start importing oil via Poland as an alternative to Russian deliveries.

The country intends to buy at least 100,000 tonnes of oil imported by Poland every month despite an agreement with Russia to resume supplies, the biznesalert.pl website has reported, citing Russia’s Kommersant newspaper.
