The Pengab index, which measures banking sentiment in the country, rose 17.9 points to “minus 5.5 points” last month, the Polish Bank Association (ZBP) and market researcher Kantar TNS said in a joint report.

The head of the Polish Bank Association, Krzysztof Pietraszkiewicz, was quoted as saying that June saw a further improvement in banking sentiment, after an earlier upswing in May, and also marked “a significant rebound from the depressed levels of March and April.”

But “despite the two-month-long improvement, all the indicators remain lower than before the pandemic and are also lower than in the same period last year,” Pietraszkiewicz added.

Kantar TNS’s Marcin Idzik said the index was still in negative territory but reflected a significant increase in customer activity on the Polish market for banking services.

The study was carried out from June 5 to 25, surveying 116 bank outlets nationwide, state news agency PAP reported.

Earlier this year, banking sentiment in Poland tumbled to its lowest level on record amid the coronavirus pandemic.
