Employment down, wages up in Polish firms y/y in October: stats office

Employment in Polish companies dropped by 1 percent in October on average in year-on-year terms, while edging up by 0.1 percent from a month earlier, the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) said on Thursday, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, average wages in Poland's corporate sector in October increased by 4.7 percent compared with the same month last year, the state-run statistics agency reported.

The average gross Polish monthly wage last month was PLN 5,458.88 (EUR 1,218, USD 1,441), according to the statistical office.

The figures are for companies with more than nine employees.

The Polish prime minister has said that some 5 million jobs have been saved around the country thanks to measures including a massive relief and stimulus package that aims to shield the economy from the coronavirus.

Poland’s labour ministry has estimated that the country's unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in October, unchanged from the previous four months.
