Survey finds Poles ambivalent about economy amid COVID-19

Thirty-one percent of Poles say the country’s economy is in good shape after a slump caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, while 30 percent disagree, a recent survey has found.

As the economy emerges from the coronavirus crisis, 31 percent are neutral on the issue, while 8 percent are undecided, according to pollster CBOS.

The number of those positive about the economy decreased by 3 percentage points from the previous survey a month earlier, while the number of negative comments rose by 2 percentage points, according to the poll.

Meanwhile, the percentage of respondents who say the country as a whole is headed in the right direction decreased to 31 percent from 33 percent in July, the survey also found.

Fifty-four percent, up from 46 percent in July, said things in the country were moving in the wrong direction, according to CBOS.

The poll was conducted from August 16 to 26 on a representative, random sample of 1,167 adult respondents.

The Polish economy grew 11.1 percent in the second quarter of this year, after contracting 0.9 percent in the first quarterthe country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported at the end of last month in a preliminary estimate.
