Anna Moskwa and Mark Brzezinski were joined by Mirosław Kowalik, who leads Westinghouse Poland, the Polish subsidiary of the US nuclear power company Westinghouse, state news agency PAP reported.
During the meeting in Warsaw, Brzezinski and Kowalik handed Poland’s climate and environment minister a report on potential Polish-US cooperation on civil nuclear energy, officials said.
'A detailed roadmap'
The climate and environment ministry said in a statement that the document “is a detailed bilateral roadmap intended to lead to the creation of six large-scale reactors based on US technology.”
“It also provides the framework for strategic Polish-US cooperation on civil nuclear energy,” reporters were told.
The report was prepared by the US companies Bechtel and Westinghouse, assessed by experts and approved by Poland’s climate and energy ministry and the US department of energy, the statement said.
Environment, economic growth, energy security
“The report will be taken into consideration by the Polish government when key decisions on technology are made in the autumn of this year,” Moskwa stated.
The minister added: “The utilisation of nuclear energy in Poland will significantly contribute to the reduction of emissions and to socio-economic growth, as well as boosting our country’s energy security, which is the biggest priority due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
Six nuclear blocks, 9 GW
Poland aims to build six nuclear blocks with a combined capacity of 9 GW. The first of the blocks is slated for completion in 2033, the PAP news agency reported.
In addition to the American offer, France’s EDF last year submitted an initial proposal to build reactors in Poland, while South Korea’s KHNP made an offer in the spring of 2022, according to PAP.
