Polish jobless rate second-lowest in EU, at 2.6% in August: Eurostat

Unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.6 percent in August, unchanged from July and the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union, the bloc’s statistics agency reported on Friday.

The Czech Republic boasted the lowest jobless rate in the bloc in August, at 2.4 percent, while Malta was in third place behind Poland, with 2.9 percent, according to the Eurostat agency.

Meanwhile, Spain had the highest seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in the EU, at 12.4 percent, while Greek unemployment was the second-highest at 12.2 percent, the agency's data showed.

Eurostat reported that the EU average for August was 6 percent, stable compared with July.

Poland’s statistics office (GUS), which uses a different methodology, reported last week that the Polish jobless rate fell to a 30-year low of 4.8 percent in August, from 4.9 percent in July.
