The European Commission said on Tuesday it had approved "an approximately EUR 1 billion (PLN 4.7 billion) Polish scheme to support the liquidity of agricultural producers in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine."

The EU executive added that the support would consist of "limited amounts of aid in the form of direct grants."

According to the European Commission's statement, "the purpose of the measure is to support agricultural producers that are currently facing liquidity shortages due to the cost increase of mineral fertilisers and the lack of stability on the agricultural market caused by the current crisis."

Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of competition policy, was quoted as saying that "this EUR 1 billion scheme will enable Poland to support agricultural producers, which are currently facing significant liquidity shortages in light of the crisis."
