According to Brazilian police, six men stormed into the Parish of Our Lady of Health and tied up the priest and a lay employee before stealing valuable liturgical vessels from the church.

The lay employee managed to escape and notify the police.

After arriving at the scene, officers found Father Wojno’s dead body close to the church, with the arms and legs attached to the neck with a barbed wire.

Father Wojno was 71.

Born in a village in Poland's Łomża province, northeast of Warsaw, he was ordained a priest 46 years ago.

He was known among his parishioners in Brazil as Padre Casimiro.

The Archdiocese of Brasilia has issued a statement on the tragic event in which it asked for prayers for the Polish priest.
