On Monday alone, six hypothermia deaths were reported amid a cold snap that sent the mercury plummeting to minus 25 Celsius in some areas of the country.
The lowest temperature, minus 27.8 Celsius, was recorded in the northeastern town of Gołdap in the early morning hours of Monday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The Government Centre for Security (RCB) has appealed to the public to alert authorities if they see homeless people sleeping rough who could be at risk of hypothermia.
In total, 15 people have died of exposure in the country since November 1, the IAR news agency reported, citing police statistics.
