The Polish oak, nicknamed Dunin and known as the "Guardian of the Białowieża Forest," is competing against such unusual trees as the “Chestnut of a Hundred Horses” from Italy, “The Weeping Sophoras of the Csokonai Theater” from Hungary, and “The Singing Lime” from the Czech Republic.

The voting takes place online at www.treeoftheyear.org, and the final verdict of the competition will be announced in late March.

Jacek Bożek, the founder and head of the Gaja Klub, a leading Polish civil society organisation dealing with environmental protection and animal rights, talks about this year’s event.
