A team of experts from the Polish Academy of Sciences has called on authorities and volunteers to help Ukrainian refugees get vaccinated against COVID-19 to stop the spread of the coronavirus amid a humanitarian crisis.

“Unfortunately, the humanitarian crisis did not put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now we must also take care of the people we are hosting here in Poland,” the experts said in a statement.

They added that refugees from war-torn Ukraine should have “free and unlimited access to face masks, disinfectant and most importantly COVID-19 vaccinations.”

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski told reporters last month that Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion of their country would be covered by Poland's COVID-19 vaccination programme free of charge.

“It’s an expression of our concern for the welfare of our closest neighbours,” Niedzielski said at the time.

To receive the vaccine, Ukrainian refugees have to produce an identity document, such as a permanent or temporary ID card or a passport, according to officials.

Poland on Tuesday reported 10,149 new coronavirus infections and 133 more deaths related to COVID-19.

Around 22.3 million Poles have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to public health authorities.

Poland has taken in more than 2.14 million refugees fleeing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Polish Border Guard agency reported on Tuesday.
