One of the event’s organisers, Anastasia Tereschenko, an activist from the western Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi, said that 77 years on, “Ukraine once again stands up against evil, against totalitarianism."

She added that in 1945 “Poland, Ukraine and Belarus defeated Nazism together,” Polish state news agency PAP reported.

“Now we must work together as well, and if we do, everything will go well,” she told reporters.

‘This war has shown who Ukraine’s real friends are’

Tereschenko thanked Poles “for making Ukrainian people feel comfortable and for enabling us to live again.”

She said: "This war has shown who Ukraine’s real brothers, real friends, are."

‘We will never forget all the good you have done for us’

Fellow Ukrainian activist, Veronika Matush, thanked Poles for their “open hearts,” the PAP news agency reported.

“We will never forget all the good you have done for us,” she said.

During the rally, participants dipped their hands in yellow and blue paint and pressed handprints on a white flag that eventually assumed Ukraine’s national colours.

The flag will now travel to the frontlines as a token of support for Ukrainian troops, who are defending their homeland against Russian aggression, organisers told reporters.

Tuesday is day 76 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Tuesday reported it had welcomed nearly 3.28 million refugees fleeing Russia's war on Ukraine.
