The new Plaza of Free Ukraine forms part of the bigger Biskupi Square and is located right next to the Russian consulate, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

At the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Kraków Mayor Jacek Majchrowski told the media: “We want to show unity with Ukraine.”

He added: “We want to show that we are with you, that we are fighting, because you are fighting, in line with our tradition, for your freedom and for ours. We can always show that David can beat Goliath.”

Ukraine’s consul general in Kraków, Vyacheslav Voynarovski, said the naming of the plaza in honour of Ukraine was a "historic event” and another step in Poland’s "unprecedented help" for his war-torn country.

Tuesday’s ceremony was attended by many Ukrainians, some of whom wore traditional folk clothes.

Flying national flags, they sang the Ukrainian national anthem and more than one had tears in their eyes, the PAP news agency reported.

The unveiling ceremony came as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued for the 139th day.

Earlier this year, the Polish coastal city of Gdańsk named one of its plazas in honour of Ukraine’s embattled port city of Mariupol.
