Polish Paralympic athletes bring home 25 medals from Tokyo

Polish athletes have brought home 25 medals, seven gold, six silver and 12 bronze, from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which ended on Sunday.

The tally placed Poland 17th in the overall table in Tokyo.

China finished top of the standings, with 207 medals, 96 gold, 60 silver and 51 bronze.

A total of 89 disabled Polish athletes, 56 men and 33 women, competed in the Paralympic Games, which took place in Tokyo from August 24 to September 5 after being postponed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Poland was represented by athletes competing in 12 sports in Japan, including para-athletics, table tennis, swimming, weightlifting and kayaking.

Polish Radio was a media partner of the Polish team at the Tokyo Paralympics.

One of the team's medals, a bronze won by visually impaired track cyclist Marcin Polak and his sighted pilot Michał Ładosz on the first day of competition in Tokyo, is surrounded by doping controversy.

Poland won 39 medals and finished 10th in the overall medal standings at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
