US Open: Poland’s Hurkacz beaten in second round

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has been eliminated in the second round at the US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in New York.

Hurkacz, seeded eight in the tournament, was beaten by Ilya Ivashka of Belarus, the world number 73, in a fierce, four-set battle, 4:6, 6:4, 6:7 (5), 3:6, on Thursday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Poland’s world number one Iga Świątek advanced to the third round of the women’s singles event, after defeating home favourite Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2 in their second-round encounter at Flushing Meadows. 

The 2022 US Open runs until September 11.
