Following last week’s narrow defeat 3-4 against the heavily favoured Villarreal, the Polish side got back on the right track with a confident win in front of their home crowd in the Polish western city of Poznań on Thursday evening.

Lech waited 27 minutes before its best scorer, Mikael Ishak, gave the Polish team the lead, running onto a brilliant through ball from João Amaral and slotting it past the goalkeeper.

But the Austrians responded quickly with an equaliser from the club’s homegrown youngster, 20-year-old Matthias Braunöder.

The visitors kept pushing and were awarded a penalty late in the first half, but Poland’s Filip Bednarek managed to save the penalty by Manfred Fisher.

With 1-1 at half-time, Lech started the second half strongly, took control over the game and in the 65th minute reclaimed the lead when Michał Skóraś converted a pass from Joel Pereira.

After the second goal, last year’s Ekstraklasa (the Polish top tier) champions dominated the game, as Kristoffer Velde added a brace to take the scoreline to 4-1 for the hosts.

Defeating the Austrian side, Lech have now found themselves second in the Group C table.

By way of his third goal in the Europa Conference League, Lech Poznań’s striker, Mikael Ishak, has moved up to the top of the competition’s scoring charts.

In their next Conference League match, the Ekstraklasa outfit will take on Israel’s Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

The match is scheduled to take place on October 6, after an international break for all European clubs at the end of September.

The Polish league champions, Lech Poznań, are world-famous for “the Poznan”, an unusual way of cheering, whereby supporters of the team turn their backs on the pitch, hold one another’s shoulders and jump, all in celebration of their team’s goal.
