The museum’s most prized works include Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, Rembrandt’s Landscape with the Good Samaritan, alongside pieces by Polish greats the likes of Stanisław Wyspiański, Jacek Malczewski and Olga Boznańska.

The website was launched on Monday, crowning the efforts of more than 120 people over a period of three years.

The culture ministry's Łukasz Gaweł said: “We want the digital resources of the museum to be used not only by professionals, as has been the case so far, but also by the widest possible range of users.”

Gaweł added: “The goal is to popularise art, but also facilitate access to information about [the] collections. Someone writing a bachelor's thesis or preparing a presentation will be able to download a reproduction without any problems.”

The National Museum in Kraków is the oldest and largest national museum in Poland. Its collection includes about 900,000 exhibits.

This year marks the institution’s 140th anniversary.

The website is available in Polish and English language versions. It is adapted to the needs of people with sight impairments.

The project was co-financed by the European Union under the Operational Programme Digital Poland for 2014-2020 and from subsidies granted by the Polish culture ministry.

The total value of the project is over PLN 9 million (EUR 2.05 mln, USD 2.25 mln).

The website can be viewed here.
