Georgia's Tsintsadze also walked away with the award for best director on Saturday following a decision by the festival’s international panel of judges.

Shindisi tells a story based on actual events from the 2008 Russian military aggression in Georgia.

Fifteen films from various countries, including three Polish productions, competed for the festival’s top prize this year.

A total of 180 movies from 63 countries, including seven world premieres, were screened throughout the event, which opened in the Polish capital on October 11.

The festival's director, Stefan Laudyn, has said that films screened at the event focus on key contemporary issues and are selected exclusively for their artistic value.

He told reporters: "We do not pick movies to suit a specific slogan or motto. We only choose those that we think are the best artistically.”

The festival was held in the Polish capital for the 35th time.
