The opera’s inaugural production, premiered on June 28, 1950, was Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.
The main anniversary event is scheduled for the autumn, with a triple-bill of Claude Debussy’s The Prodigal Son, Arthur Honegger’s Judith and Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring set to premiere on November 20.
The musical direction will be in the hands of the company’s principal conductor, Brazilian-born José Maria Florêncio.
Earlier, on August 21, the Baltic Opera will reopen its doors after a months-long lockdown with a production of The Time Machine, a children’s opera by contemporary Italian composer Francesco Bottigliero.
Over the past seven decades, the Baltic Opera has given 285 opera and ballet premieres.
In 2010, the Gdańsk opera was listed by BBC Television as one of Europe’s nine best opera companies, alongside Covent Garden in London, the Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Opera La Monnaie in Brussels, and the Amsterdam Opera.
