A Warsaw University graduate in musicology, she served as head of Polish Radio Two, the public broadcaster’s arts-and-music channel, from 1991 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2007.

She laid the foundations for Polish Radio’s collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which she considered an important tool for the promotion of Polish culture and making Polish music present on the international music circuit.

Markowska recorded numerous interviews with some of Poland’s most outstanding composers and conductors, including Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Jan Krenz, Witold Lutosławski, Roman Palester, Krzysztof Penderecki, Władysław Szpilman and Paweł Szymański.

Her conversations with conductor Jan Krenz were published in book form.  She was also a co-editor of a major study devoted to the plight of Polish musicians during World War II.

One of Markowska’s missions in life was the promotion of the musical legacy of Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994).

She edited an album documenting his life and career to mark the centenary of the composer’s birth, and from 2015 to 2018 served as president of the Witold Lutosławski Society in Warsaw.
